About Old Cuscatlan

Ancient Cuscatlán is a young city of ancient origin. In 1550 its population was estimated at approximately 1,550 Indians. In 1740, according to the mayor of San Salvador, Don Manuel de Gálvez Corral, he had 43 tax Indians or heads of family (about 215 people) corn, hens, cotton and wheat producers.

According to data from Archbishop Pedro Cortez and Larraz, in 1770 the village was annexed to the parish of San Jacinto and its population was represented by 76 indigenous people, distributed in 19 families; and 115 lads distributed in 25 families.

At the end of the 18th century the town had almost become extinct; and in 1807, according to the mayoral corrector, Don Antonio Gutierrez de Ulloa, “was an almost destroyed town, with only 14 Indians and 35 Ladinos.”

The municipality of Cuscatlán joined the department of San Salvador on 12 June 1824, and thus remained until 28 January 1835, when it was included in the Federal District. But on July 30, 1839 it became a municipality of the department of San Salvador.

By law of January 28, 1865, the municipality of Antiguo Cuscatlán was separated from the department and district of San Salvador and incorporated into the department of La Libertad and the district of New San Salvador.

By Legislative Decree No. 302, dated 30 March 1971, he was granted the title of villa; and on 19 February 1987, by new Legislative Decree, number 549, he was granted the title of city.
