Human beings depend on the balance of ecosystems to survive. Costa Rica is an essential part of the mechanism that ensures ecological protection. We are a small country with 51,000 square kilometers, home to more than 500,000 species, with 26% of its territory protected and representing 6% of the world’s biodiversity. With 900 bird species, more than 35,000 insect species, 240 mammal species, and 1,600 orchid species—20% of them endemic—our natural wealth is due to our geographic position between the Caribbean Sea/Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, serving as a bridge between North and South America and acting as a gateway for countless species.
For decades, both the Government of Costa Rica and private individuals and organizations have strongly embraced conservation as a pillar of sustainable development, through the purchase of forests to ensure their protection, as a commitment to youth and future generations. Thirty-five years ago, one family decided to establish a successful conservation project, founded on three pillars: Conservation, Research, and Education.
This property is a lush jungle paradise of magnificent rainforest/cloud forest, located in Costa Rica’s Continental Divide at an altitude between 1,500 meters (4,921 ft) and 2,000 meters (6,562 ft) above sea level. It forms a Biological Corridor between Poás Volcano National Park and Juan Castro Blanco Aquatic National Park. It is located only 1 hour and 30 minutes from the capital city of San José, and 1 hour and 15 minutes from Juan Santamaría International Airport, with easy access to well-known tourist attractions and natural wonders such as breathtaking waterfalls.
The reserve covers 385 hectares (952 acres), a highly favorable habitat where bird and mammal species thrive within an extraordinary biodiversity. Our Reserve features multiple water sources, rivers, and waterfalls, and offers more than 15 kilometers (9.35 miles) of trails that penetrate deep into the forest. A paradise for naturalists, birdwatchers, entomologists, orchid specialists, photographers, nature lovers, meditation enthusiasts, researchers, and scientists from around the world. We are living in a historic moment of global ecological and conservation awareness.
Since 2004, the Reserve has hosted an Orchid Conservation Project in the cloud forest: the Dr. Stephen H. Kirby Orchid Garden, recognized nationally and internationally. It includes a laboratory and a herbarium collection with approximately 250 classified orchid species, collected exclusively within our reserve. Due to the scientific research and documentation carried out over the last 17 years by our biologists and highly qualified staff, along with scientists from the University of Costa Rica and Lankester Botanical Gardens, we have gained international recognition for being truly invaluable. The research results produced in the reserve are so important that several key studies have been presented at three International Congresses in 2003, 2007, and 2015.
We preserve hundreds of bird species such as hawks, trogons, warblers, tanagers, quetzals, scaled antpittas, blue-and-white jays, black-faced solitaires, long-tailed silky-flycatchers, speckled tanagers, spotted spinetails, Chiriquí quail-doves, buff-fronted quail-doves, ornate hawk-eagles, among many others, as well as the beautiful hummingbirds that brighten and decorate our Reserve. Among many other mammals, we have armadillos, ocelots, jaguarundis, jaguars, tapirs, agoutis, pacas, peccaries, coatis, raccoons, deer, hares, spider monkeys, white-faced capuchins, and howler monkeys. Also bats, rabbits, pocket gophers, squirrels, porcupines, mountain goats, tapirs, and frogs such as Agalychnis annae and Haddadus.
The Hotel features 10 rooms, with the possibility to expand, and facilities that—together with a 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom apartment—serve as lodging, an operations center, and study areas. We also offer a restaurant with capacity for 44 guests, a lobby, a meeting room, an orchid laboratory, and a spacious terrace ideal for enjoying hummingbird observation, as they constantly visit our feeders.
